Entry #7, Jenna Hatfield, Sr., Norfolk, Neb.

Wow, I can’t believe that summer is half over for the Coyote Volleyball team! While our vacation months seem to be flying by, I feel that many of the girls are eager to get back into the gym and many of them have been preparing themselves well over the summer.

This summer I have been trying to balance daily workouts, a summer job, and of course some rest, relaxation, and fun. As far as workouts go I have been doing a mixture of lifting, agilities, and sprints with Coach Frazier, our Strength and Conditioning Coach, and also a little bit of yoga and distance running on my own. Workouts with Coach Frazier consist of lifting three days a week and sprints and agilities for two. Living in Vermillion over the summer has really helped me stay consistent with my workouts and I have formed friendships with many other USD athletes. The yoga classes I have been attending three times a week help to relieve tension in sore muscles and also to increase my flexibility and balance. There have even been a few football players attending yoga sessions with me.

I am very excited that this summer is one of the first in the past few years that we have had enough girls in town to put together open gym sessions. So far, once a week, a handful of graduates, returners, and incoming freshman have gotten together for an hour or so of pick up games. It has been really nice to get some touches on the ball before our first day of pre-season and I have really enjoyed playing with some of our incoming freshman. I feel that playing with each other in a stress free environment, such as open gym, will help to alleviate a little bit of the anxiety and intimidation that first week of practice.

When I am not working out, most of my time is spent at The Bluffs Golf Course here in Vermillion where I am either working in the clubhouse or running the beverage cart. I enjoy my summer job very much since the hours are fairly flexible and I get to spend a lot of time outside in the sun. If I’m not at the dome or working you will most likely find me at the pool or on the river. I love the sun and have enjoyed many days of laying out and reading a good book. Like many other girls I am now addicted to the Twilight series and the charm of Edward Cullen!

We are five weeks away from reporting to fall camp and while I am not ready for summer to end I am eager to begin practice so that my teammates and I are able to see how the hard work that we have put in off the court will eventually surface as accomplishments on the court.
