Entry #11, Mallory Mork (Fr., Sac City, Iowa)
After weeks of practice and what sometimes seemed like endless road miles of away games against opponents like Ohio, Wisconsin and Duke, we finally got to play at the Dome Thursday night jumping into conference play. We started conference play against Texas-Pan American in front of a nice home crowd. Unfortunately, we did not perform in front of that crowd like this team is capable of performing. UTPA took us in three straight. The first game was back and forth with six ties throughout the game, ending in a two-point loss. We really needed to pull this first game off with a win to continue momentum into game two. The team had too many errors to come out on top. Games two and three somewhat ran the same course as game one with errors also proving to be a factor in the outcome.
On Saturday, it was time to compete against our second conference opponent, Houston Baptist, with a home match again. The team only had one day to prepare for HBU. HBU came out with very few errors and took the first two games from us. During the break after game two, everyone knew the momentum had to change in order to be able to take the final three games to make it a win in our favor. The third game lived up to that, the score went back and forth the entire game and it made for some nervous moments. But we fought hard and came out on top by two, committing less errors than the first two games. It was fun. Our momentum and rhythm was starting to work. The fourth and fifth games continued with smiles, enthusiasm, and more confidence as we finished with wins to take our first conference victory of the season. It felt really good to come back from a two-game deficit and finish with this win.
The Coyotes are ready to defend the dome again on Sept. 25 vs. Seattle University at 7 p.m.
Go Yotes!
