Coyote Strength and Conditioning

The USD strength and conditioning program is an important part of the preparation for Coyote student-athletes. The program is under the direction of Head Coach Jevon Bowman and graduate assistant Carter Jacobson. The strength and conditioning program utilizes several different aspects of training in order to serve the Coyote athletes.

The strength and conditioning staff at the University of South Dakota takes a comprehensive approach to the physical development of the student-athlete. Strength training, speed development, plyometrics, agility, and conditioning programs are based on the specific movements and physiological demands of each sport.

The weight room is 4,000-square foot training facility which includes free weights, weight machines, and cardio equipment. The facility features 12 multi-purpose platform/combo racks with bench, incline, squat, and pull-up capabilities. The facility also has two sets of dumbbells ranging from five to 140 pounds.

Olympic-style weight lifting movements are taught through a progression of exercises to ensure safety and proper technique. Our key to success for our program is a hands-on approach, which involves coaching and teaching each athlete on every lift, stride, and movement. Just like the athlete is coached on the field, court, or mat, he or she is also coached in the weight room.

The goal of the Coyote strength and conditioning staff is to assist the student-athlete in reaching his or her full physical potential. Training programs are designed to increase an athlete’s strength, speed, agility, flexibility, conditioning, and explosiveness that are all important components in the developing a highly-skilled collegiate athlete.

This is accomplished through the design and implementation of year-round training programs that increase each student-athlete's level of strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and flexibility. The Coyote strength and conditioning program is one of great pride. It is where student-athletes develop a relentless work ethic and the mind-set that we will outwork our opponents in the end.

The USD Strength and Conditioning Staff challenge each athlete to bring an attitude of hard work, accountability, and total effort to each workout so that the athlete will improve both physically and mentally.
