Our Mission
Our Mission is to provide you, a Coyote student-athlete, the support necessary to assist you in reaching your full academic potential. The program is designed to assist you throughout your college career.
What We Can Do for You
USD provides you with two full-time Athletic Academic Advisors who help coordinate your academic support services and provide you with:
Academic and Career Counseling
Assistance with Class Scheduling and Selection of a Major
Connections with Faculty to Track Academic and Degree Progress
Arrangement of Tutors
Access to Supplemental Instruction
Monitoring of Class Attendance and Academic Progress
Coordination of the Coyote Athletic Study Center
An Academic Orientation Class Exclusively for Student-Athletes
Promotion of Student-Athlete Academic Success to the University, Alumni and Prospective Employers
First-Year Student Athletes
First-year student-athletes receive particular attention because first-year success is crucial to graduation. To help make the transition easier, we concentrate a great deal of time on the creation of tools for success with new student experiences. These tools include:
A customized academic support plan for each individual athlete.
Attendance at the Coyote Athletic Study Center, which may be required. In addition to structured study time, counseling, supplemental study and tutoring will be provided.
Enrollment in the Academic Orientation class. New student- athletes will be encouraged to enroll in the course, which provides unlimited information on issues critical to success on and off the field.

DAVID LORENZ

Dave Lorenz served as Dean of Students at The U, retiring in 2007 after eight years. However, he did not go quietly into retirement. Instead, Lorenz took on the role of Athletic Academic Advisor at USD, where he provides academic support to Coyote student-athletes. Lorenz has an M.P.A (Public Administration) degree from The University of South Dakota and earned a B.S. in History from The University of South Dakota at Springfield. His more than 30 years of service to The U has also included serving as Director of Admissions and Director of Student Financial Aid. |
BECKY FLYNN-JENSEN

Becky Flynn-Jensen was a star athlete at Wakonda High School in Wakonda, S.D., and at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. She just completed a 10-year career as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at The University of South Dakota. Flynn-Jensen earned her B.A. in Psychology and Journalism at Creighton University and completed her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Dayton University. Flynn-Jensen earned NCAA second-team academic all-American honors in 1993–94 and was a NCAA post-graduate scholar in 1996. |
