Camp Fever

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

The Coyote football program’s annual summer camps have been in full swing over the past 10 days. The final session starts today and concludes Saturday.

The camps are among the largest in the Midwest. As you walk about on the Coyote practice fields, you will see hundreds of high school players across the landscape. It’s a sight to see.

The camps are well organized and a lot of time and effort goes into planning from Coyote coach Ed Meierkort and his staff.

The USD camp format is popular because the athletes get instruction from Coyote coaches in the morning, and then get the chance to scrimmage in the afternoon, most often against teams they’re not used to facing. Plus, the King of the Hill competition, which is usually held during the second night of a session, has become immensely popular.

There are more than 1,800 athletes scheduled to participate this year. That is an impressive number during these tough economic times.

The football camp is part of a busy summer of camps at USD. The Coyote women’s basketball, men’s basketball, swimming and diving, volleyball and women’s soccer programs all have held – or will hold – camps during the summer months.

Other News and Notes

Four USD men’s golfers competed in the South Dakota Golf Association Match Play championships held last weekend at the Bluffs Golf Club in Vermillion. Justin Johnson, John Vining and Jim Walsh, all of Sioux Falls, along with Gavin FAwbush (Madison, S.D.), competed in the amateur event. Fawbush and Vining both won their opening matches Friday while Johnson lost his first-round match. Vining actually beat Walsh on the 20th hole to win his second match with Fawbush losing in the Saturday morning session. Vining was eliminated later that day.

--As mentioned on the USD Coyotes Web site, the USD football program was mentioned as part of the Great West Conference preview in the Sporting News 2009 College Yearbook. It is available at selected newsstands. The magazine does a fine job of doing in depth coverage of the FCS conferences.
