USD-SDSU rivalry

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

The recent announcement that the University of South Dakota will meet South Dakota State in women’s basketball on Feb. 15 prompted me to do some research on the history of rivalry.

The official first meeting between the schools (not including when USD was a club team) was in 1971. There have been 58 meetings overall between the schools in women’s basketball.

The contests between the two teams in the past drew huge crowds in Vermillion and Brookings, S.D. The last six meetings between the two teams featured an average of 7,444 fans, which shows just how much interest there is in the rivalry between the two schools.

Seven of the top 10 women’s basketball crowds ever at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. came when USD played the Jackrabbits there.

USD and SDSU shared the regular-season title in 2002-03.

The two schools will also meet on a regular basis starting in 2011-12 when the Coyotes join the Summit League.

Media Notes:

---USD women’s soccer coach Marcia Oliveira was featured in a column by Mick Garry of the Argus Leader on Thursday, June 18. Oliveira is a native of Brazil, and the article focused on her international connections in terms of recruiting. The link to the article is below.

---Several media outlets were in attendance at the Coyote Golf Tour’s stop in Rapid City. The event attracted a record number of participants and was held at the beautiful Red Rock Golf Club in Rapid City.

Here are some links to some of the stories done on the USD athletic department.
