Amos Allen Signs Contract with CFL’s BC Lions

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

Former University of South Dakota running back Amos Allen recently signed a contract with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Allen, a 5-8, 185-pound back who is a native of Miami, Fla., played for USD in 2007 and had an outstanding season. He rushed for 1,961 yards (a single-season record at USD) and 15 touchdowns during that season. Allen also holds the Coyote record for most 200 yard games in a season (four) and is tied with former Coyote great Stefan Logan for the most 100-yard rushing games in a single season (10).

It is likely Allen could fill the void in the Lions’ backfield left by the departure of Logan, who played for the BC Lions in 2008 and enjoyed a big season. Logan accounted for 1,366 yards from scrimmage (6th in the CFL) while finishing fourth in rushing (889 yards). This offseason, Logan signed a two-year contract with the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and will compete for a job as a running back or kick returner.

USD News and Notes
---USD’s athletic department just announced that the Coyote football team will play at Northwestern University of the Big Ten in the 2012 season. That means USD will face three Big Ten opponents – Minnesota (2010), Wisconsin (2011) and Northwestern (2012) – in three consecutive years. Minnesota opens a new stadium this year, while Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium is one of the most famous collegiate venues in the country. Northwestern’s Ryan Field was also listed as one of the “Country’s Best” by Recreation Management Magazine in 2004. Add to that playing at Central Florida in 2010 – and that’s four great venues for the Coyote football team to play at. Pretty cool.

---Four of the teams the USD softball team played this season – Iowa, Nebraska, Sacred Heart and Winona State – all advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Iowa, Nebraska and Sacred Heart all qualified for the NCAA Division I tournament, while Winona State advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series. USD beat Sacred Heart, 7-6 on its Florida trip.

---Alicia Brown, a member of The USD women’s basketball team, was featured in an article by the Argus Leader’s Mick Garry on Sunday. The article focused on Brown’s struggles with a serious knee injury that she suffered in Sept. 2008. A link to Mick’s article can be found at:

Former USD athlete updates
--There are several former USD football players on the Sioux Falls Storm (Indoor Football League) roster. They include defensive back Mark Blackburn, defensive back T. J. Simmons, kicker Cody Butler and offensive lineman Tim Schneider. The Storm is 3-6 on the season after beating Wichita, 49-21 on Saturday.

--Steve Schmidt, a former Coyote football player and track athlete from 1999-2001, is a member of the Sioux City Bandits roster of the Indoor Football League.
