Big Home Games Ahead for USD Men

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

Two 2009 NCAA tournament teams are coming to the DakotaDome in the next two weeks to face the University of South Dakota men’s basketball team. The Coyotes will play host to Morehead State (Ky.) on Dec. 28 (7 p.m.) and Cornell on Jan. 8 (7:30 p.m.).

These are two outstanding opponents for the Coyotes to face at home, giving USD fans a taste of NCAA tournament-caliber competition.

Morehead State finished 20-16 a year ago but won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The Eagles beat Alabama State, 58-43, in the NCAA tournament play-in game, before falling to overall No. 1 seed Louisville, 74-54 in the opening round. Four starters return from that team for Morehead.

Cornell has been to two consecutive NCAA tournaments and is 8-2 through Dec. 20. All five starters return for the Big Red from last year’s NCAA tournament team which lost to Missouri – an Elite Eight qualifier – 78-59 in the first round.

The Coyote men (6-5) have played a tough schedule to start the year, with road games at Texas Tech, Marquette, Drake and Wyoming, plus a neutral site game against Oregon State of the Pac 10. USD already has one win over a 2009 NCAA tournament team when it defeated Binghamton at the Drake tournament.

Top 10 DakotaDome moments

Emilie Kluth, USD’s diving coach who also works in the sports information office, and Sports Information Coordinator Amil Anderson worked together to help form the top 10 moments in DakotaDome history. It’s very well done work with a lot of research and time being invested. Check it out at http://www.usdcoyotes.com/sports/news/release.asp?release_id=5443

Rolfe Makes History

Terry Rolfe is already putting together a pretty impressive career for the USD men’s swimming and diving team, and he’s just a sophomore. He put himself in the history books recently when he was named the Summit League’s Swimming Male Athlete of the Week. What is the history? Rolfe is the first Coyote ever to receive a weekly honor from the Summit League. The USD swimming and diving teams are associate members in the Summit League this season, while all USD sports (minus football) will join the league in 2011-12.

Former Coyote notes

--The Iverson family is featured in a column by the Argus Leader’s Mick Garry. The column includes the travels of Chuck and Karla Iverson as they follow the Division I basketball careers of their children, Kara and Colton. Kara is a senior on the USD women’s basketball team and key part of USD’s rotation. Chuck Iverson, who is now the athletic director at Mount Marty College in Yankton, is a 1973 USD graduate and Coyote Hall of Famer. He is USD’s all-time leader in career rebounds.
