Learning Experience

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

USD Academic Advising Coordinator Dave Lorenz teaches a Monday night class in the fall semester called A&S 100 Orientation Seminar: NCAA Athletes. It is a class for the incoming freshman student-athletes at USD. On Monday, Dec. 7, the class had a chance to be involved in an interesting project to close out the semester.

The students – numbering past 40 – had a chance to sit down with four members in the media in small groups to discuss what the media expects from student-athletes and also had the chance to conduct mock interviews. I gave a brief talk to the USD students before they were separated into smaller groups for each of the individuals.

Media present included Warren Swain, the radio voice of the Coyotes for football and men’s basketball; Mick Garry, veteran Coyote beat writer for the Argus Leader; James Cimburek, the sports editor at the Yankton Press and Dakotan; and Justin Rust, sports editor of the Volante and part-time writer at the Yankton P and D.

Freshman student-athletes are adjusting to a lot of things already – a busy class and practice schedule and being away from home among them. For some athletes, being interviewed by the media – whether print or electronic – is entirely new. This was a great opportunity to not only get to know members of the media but to learn about being interviewed and to actually practice it.
