Signing Day

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

Last Wednesday marked the beginning of early signing period for NCAA student-athletes. USD’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with the Coyote volleyball team, all have announced their 2010-11 recruiting classes.

All three teams have added very talented recruits.

The USD men signed Trevor Gruis (Ellsworth, Minn.), Jared Bartling (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Steve Tecker of Brule, Wis. Bartling and Gruis are both outstanding centers, while Teckner is an athletic guard.

The USD women’s basketball team also had an impressive recruiting class. Katelyn Edwards (Crete, Neb.) and Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) are two highly-touted recruits from the state of Nebraska, while Carsey Barden (Whitewood, S.D.) is one of the state of South Dakota’s premiere high school players. Barden plays at Sturgis High School.

USD’s volleyball team also added three prep standouts, including Amber Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa), Tori Kroll (Germantown, Wis.) and Natalie Walseth (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Aschoff and Walseth are hitters, while Kroll is a setter.

These are all student-athletes with outstanding credentials who will be exciting to watch once they are in Coyote uniforms.

Big finish for Coyote football team

It was a strong finish to 2009 for the USD football team as the Coyotes posted back-to-back Great West Conference wins to close the season. USD recorded a dominating 45-21 win over Southern Utah on Nov.7 and concluded the season with a thrilling 50-48 at Cal Poly. USD finished at 5-5 and in a tie for second in the Great West Conference at 2-2.

The Coyotes’ record doesn’t fully indicate how well the team played throughout the year. USD lost two games in overtime to UC-Davis and Montana State by a combined eight points, while also losing to Northern Colorado by four. The wins over Southern Utah and Cal Poly should give the Coyotes momentum going into the offseason.

USD volleyball signee updates

Amber Aschoff, a 2010 USD Volleyball recruit, helped Ankeny (Iowa) High School win the Class 4A state championship last week. Aschoff had a team-high 18 kills in Ankeny’s four-set win over Iowa City West in the championship match. Aschoff was named to the Class 4A All-Tournament team after recording 49 kills in three matches.

Tori Kroll, another 2010 Coyote Volleyball recruit, was recently named the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches’ Association All-State second team. Kroll is a native of Germantown, Wis., who wrapped up a stellar prep career as a setter at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School.

Josh Stamer

It was good to see former Coyote football standout Josh Stamer get another shot in the NFL. Stamer, a veteran linebacker who spent most of his pro career with the Buffalo Bills, signed with the Cleveland Browns last week. The Browns’ linebacking corps has been decimated by injuries, which should give Stamer chances for playing time. Stamer spent 2008 with the Tennessee Titans.

Stefan Logan

Former Coyote football star Stefan Logan is averaging 25.5 yards per kick return for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Logan has two returns of 40 yards or more on the season. Logan is averaging 8.8 yards per punt return as well for the Steelers, who are 6-3 on the season.
