Coyote Chatter
In the midst of one season, starting another

The University of South Dakota athletic department is at an interesting point in its year. The Coyote football, volleyball, women’s soccer, golf and cross country teams are busy in the midst of their 2009 seasons. The USD football team hits the road to play Montana State this week; the Coyote volleyball team begins at six-match homestand tonight (Oct. 13); the Coyote golf teams compete in tournaments on Oct. 19-20; the USD cross country teams are at the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival; and the USD women’s soccer team gets a break before resuming play at North Dakota on Oct. 25.
That’s also a sign that the winter seasons aren’t far away. The Coyote men’s and women’s basketball teams officially open practice on Friday, Oct. 16. Hard to believe that time of year is here already.
And, the Coyote swimming and diving teams open their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 17 at home against rival North Dakota for a 1 p.m. dual. An exciting year awaits the Coyote swimming teams as they prepare for the season-ending Summit League Championships in Indianapolis. Both USD teams have brought in promising freshman classes to go with their talented rosters. Should be a fun year for the USD swimming and diving teams.
In fact, conference tournament season isn’t far away for the Coyote volleyball, women’s soccer and cross country teams. USD’s cross country teams will compete in the Great West Championships in New York on Oct. 31; the Coyote women’s soccer team competes at the Great West Championships on Nov. 6-9 in Newark, N.J.; and the Coyote volleyball team competes in the Great West Championships on Nov. 20-21 in Houston, Texas.
Of course, prior to those events, the Coyote women’s soccer team still has three regular-season matches left, while the Coyote volleyball team has nine (after the Oct. 13 match against Morningside).
One USD team is finished for the fall season: The Coyote women’s tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule last weekend at the rain-plagued Western Illinois Invitational.
Big stretch ahead for USD volleyball
After playing all but four of its first 18 matches away from home, the USD volleyball team starts a key six-match home stand on Oct. 13. Included in that stretch are four Great West Conference matches, including three against teams ahead of USD in the standings: Utah Valley, New Jersey Institute of Technology and North Dakota. It’s a great chance for the Coyotes to make some noise in the conference race.
Joe Glenn
It was great to see former Coyote Joe Glenn in attendance at Saturday’s Dakota Days game. Glenn, a member of the USD Hall of Fame, was making his first appearance at a homecoming game since 1970. Glenn, the former head coach at Northern Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, did live radio and TV interviews along with visiting with the alumni.
